Chip Repair

The Chip Is Frightening

Chips in a windshield can be scary looking. Although, chips are usually not as scary as they are made out. In this industry, a general rule of thumb is that if the chip can be completely covered by a coin and it doesn’t obstruct ones line of vision, it can be repaired given the chip doesn’t expand during reparation. Environmental factors, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, can actually cause a chip to worsen upon repair. This is dependent on how the damage occurred and what type of damage was done.

Is The Glass Broken

Windshields are considered broken when they a rock chip, according to tacit standards put forth in the auto glass industry. If the repaired chip hasn’t grown after maneuvering the vehicle about for a while, the job is done well and successfully. There is a common misconception is that the chip will completely disappear upon repair. If there is a watermark or “scar” on the surface of the glass, don’t panic it is very normal.

The Job of a Windshield

Windshields act as a failsafe for the roof in the case of an accident. Which is why chip repair is only to maintain the integrity of the glass, not to look pretty. However, if the repair does look pretty, it’s a sweet add-on. There are a couple of circumstances in which replacing the whole windshield is the necessary option. Should the chip crack further while the technician is attempting the repair the chance of additional fracturing is high. Thus compromising the safety of your vehicle.

Repair Or Replace

If the crack extends into more than one layer of the laminated glass, the chip is larger than a quarter in its entirety, there are three or more chips, the impact area is smashed to dust, or the inside layer of glass is cracked that would result in a need to replace the glass. All of this being due to overall safety being threatened. Allowing weak points in the windshield to develop sincerely damages the structural integrity of the glass. This can also lead to legal action, such as traffic tickets due to obstruction of your vision. Insurance companies may recommend replacing the windshield if the repaired chip obstructs your vision with a watermark even though it is repaired. If you can’t see through it, it’s still dangerous!
